about

Shock Octopus return once more with a multi-tentacled embrace for its fourth EP.

The Octopi have been through an immense full circle journey this last decade. Starting off as an experimental, quirky, electrified 4 piece rock band in Perth. After parting ways, Shock Octopus reformed as a duo, releasing two EPs of a new contemplative, stripped-back, acoustic sound.

This year, Scott Andrews and Michael Bayliss were re-joined by Dave Blair to record and release an old song as a fundraiser single. Instantly feeling nostalgic for the wide screen, cinematic sounds of yore, they were determined to go back to the studio to collaborate on a return to the full electrified set up again (despite the challenge of being in separate states and continents)!

Life On A Pier (words and music by Michael Bayliss) was Michael’s first attempt at writing a full song arrangement from scratch, on the keyboard. He was then joined by David Blair on bass and guitar, by Damien Langley on drums and Magda on backing vocals. This is an epic song about climate grief, an orchestrated eulogy for these difficult but fascinating times.

No Easy Way Down (music and all instruments David Blair, lyrics Michael Bayliss) was a staple of Shock Octopus’ live sets, and details climate change from the perspective of a polar bear. This epic track was included in a double A-side single with Counting Backwards to fundraise for Extinction Rebellion. Magda on backing vox.

Zero Gravity (music and words Scott Andrews, arrangement Michael Bayliss) is a contemplative and existential ballad which was originally written by Scott as an acoustic homage to the style of Neil Young. Michael loved the song and rearranged it with piano, choir-scapes and a light electronic dusting. Magda joined with incredible backing vox, Dave on bass, Damien on drums.

Antarctica (music and words Michael Bayliss, arrangement David Blair) was written in 2008 for Dave and Michael’s previous band, before Shock Octopus. It was recorded in a different era with a more DIY, Lo-Fi ethic, however its wind swept, icy sound was a perfect way to round off this EP.

Enjoy!
