Beyond the sprawl Beyond the blight the neon lights Beyond the sea Under the trees Our secret garden We have to go a little further That they’ll never find us here Can you hear the chainsaws near You and me We need the dirt beneath our feet Need the green within our reach To think we’re another race Darwin drawls Your darling days are drawing near Pull the hearse beyond the green Disillusionment falls here And when it’s gone We’ll float up high And when it’s gone I hear your cry And when you’re gone A kiss goodbye divine There is nowhere to run Like a deer…caught…in the headlights a Deer…caught…in the headlights a DEER! CAUGHT! IN THE HEADLIGHTS A DEER! CAUGHT! IN THE HEADLIGHTS!! Boom time make me wanna holler Boom time drawn me down to pallor Boring new holes through my wood Boom time make we wanna holler Boom time drawn me down to pallor Boring new hole through my wood They’ve found all the holes to your womb Losing, I’m losing it Losing, I’m losing you Losing, I’m losing it Losing, I’m losing you (Burn black for him baby Big black, she burns for him Burn black for him baby Big black she burns for him) Termite people make me holler Termite people drawn me down to pallor They ate all the holes in my wood Termite people make me holler Termite people drawn me down to pallor They ate all the holes in my wood Ate through my holes to your womb Losing, I’m losing it… (Burn black for him baby..) My dear, she's caught in the headlights my Dear, caught, in the headlights she Plays, dead, in the floodlights we Play dead in the floodlights

A maladjusted maid Not one for servitude Said 'I slipped and feel to earth 'It's only an interlude' Our lips touched briefly Her shifting taste of salt and sea Said 'shackled man oh take my hand away from here, away from land.' Fly to Armenia Ride the waves on Echo Beach and Hide it out in Shangri-La Anywhere but here Through the strawberry fields Beyond the stratosphere and Up above the solar fields Anywhere but here My mind is firm cast It wanders its own past I fear life I fear the future A stoic cell of psychic sutures Aurorus Nebula Shall we head straight for Jupiter and Bide our time in Europa Anywhere but here Through jets of Enceladus Scale cliffs of Valles Marineris Never ever we'd adhere Anywhere but here She cried 'come fly with me Fly seeds that ride the breeze' But I am gnarled my branches boughed They've been pointing at the ground now She cried 'come fly with me two souls that run free' But I have anchored all my roots now My inner wars go ever round She flies to Armenia Rides the waves on Echo Beach and Hitting high in Shangri-La And I will still be here Not through strawberry fields Not above the stratosphere and Not above the solar fields And I will always be here

about

In releasing our 10 retrospective '10 Years Into Darkness - The Best Of Shock Octopus' we realised one thing...we never released our signature song as a single!

This was the song that started the band with people shouting along to 'A deer caught in the headlights' at our early gigs. But we still believed it was too weird to lead our first EP and when we released 'A Crisis!' we believed we had catchier songs.

But in looking back we bring back old loves, and Deer! is too good not to have a run on the airwaves.

So here we go folks - 'A Deer! Caught! In The Headlights!' backed with another of our early songs that never made it to the album - 'Maladjusted Maid'

Join us on a trip down memory lane.
